The WSET® (Wine & Spirit Education Trust) was founded in 1969. It exists to promote, provide and develop high quality education and sought-after qualifications in wines and spirits for those in the wine and spirit industry, as well as for the interested consumer.

We were approached by WSET to design & develop an iPhone app which would be both fun to play as well as being informative, helping the player to learn and increase their knowledge of wines around the world. We devised a game with a mechanic that allows you to zoom into various wine producing areas of the world, and the game operates by you having to select the correct area where you think wine label you are shown in the main game interface originates from.

You simply tap the screen where you think each bottle should be placed to zoom in and release to confirm you are happy with your selection. There are six main levels currently developed, all of which increase in complexity to further test your knowledge of wine as you progress through the game.

There is a specific time limit of 60 seconds for each level, with ten wines in each to try and place correctly. Within each level you are asked to decide what country, region (eg. the South of France) or sub-region (eg. Bordeaux) you think the wine originates from.

The labels presented to the player are from a vast database, so you will be be tested on a random selection every time you replay the game.

We have integrated the mobile gaming network OpenFeint into the APP, which allows players to compare their scores with others in the network, import friends from major social network sites, join leader boards, forums and chat rooms.

When you have finished each game, you are shown the list of wines you have been faced with placing during the game, whether you get them correct or otherwise you are provided with generic tasting notes on that wine or region so as well as testing what you already know about wine, the APP aims to extend that knowledge.

THE CLIENT SAID:

We are extremely pleased with the finished iPhone App, it is better than we originally imagined. After briefly testing it in-house we realized how addictive the game is and how it improves your knowledge of the different wine regions around the world. It has been great working with Moonshine media, they quickly grasped exactly what we wanted and needed from our brief and delivered a sophisticated game that fits our corporate image and customer profile.

It has also been a pleasure working with such a dedicated and professional team providing a quality product with a quality service.

Lowe and Partners is an international advertising agency headquartered in London. The Agency is a unit of the Interpublic Group, one of the world’s largest advertising agency holding companies. The Interpublic Group is one of the big four agency holdings conglomerates, including Publicis, WPP, and Omnicom.
Lowe and Partners initiated a rebranding project which included redefining the digital strategy on a global scale. For an agency such as Lowe that believes so strongly on building big creative ideas that put the brand into the heart of popular culture, it was essential that those credentials were portrayed on the website, enhancing the brand and philosophy of the network through its web presence.

We sought to create a website solution that would allow local agencies to upload a variety of rich content format across multiple sites with greater ease and immediacy and allow the ability for localisation. To meet these objectives set by the client , we developed a WordPress site built around the concept of greater back-end functionality. An extensive content management system solution was built into the site enabling the national offices of Lowe and its partners to upload and edit their own content.
A site theme with an elegant and sophisticated aesthetic was developed, showcasing latest news, work, case studies and clients from across the organisation in a clean and simple format with clearly signed navigation points. This served to align all our local agency websites to conform to the same look and feel as the worldwide site, affirming that Lowe and Partners is a global network of agencies.

The body of work is, in its entirety, a portfolio of aired TV and Print campaigns – with which we fully integrated social media plug-ins, allowing each piece of work to be easily shared at the users convenience.

An integral office location finder is prominently visible throughout the site that gives users immediate contact information and a click through redirection to the relevant localised site.

THE CLIENT SAID:

Having come from an consultancy background, I know how difficult it is to select an outsourced partner. Moonshine acted with the highest level of professionalism from the start of project, and not only demonstrated the skill and expertise to execute the brief successfully, but also provided excellent support after delivery, to ensure our digital strategy was realised.

Who do you turn to when you need to get an app in two weeks?

Headline Publishing had acquired the rights to Lisa Gardner’s ‘Catch Me’ in hardback and ‘Love You More’ in paperback for their Spring 2012 list. These two titles, to be published simultaneously formed part of a series following Boston Detective D. D. Warren as she cracked her cases. Headline Publishing wanted a digital campaign not only to match the author’s status as a New York Times bestseller, but also to build her author presence in the UK, and to drive traffic for ‘Crime Files’, a brand which included other writers in the genre.

Moonshine’s digital creative team built an application in Facebook around a competition to win a Kindle Fire. Headline’s cover art comprised the prominent image on the FaceBook homepage, but once the Like button was clicked, nine separate squares appeared, all containing further content. Exerts from Lisa’s two books, specially recorded video, and links to purchase were held here, meaning the app was of interest to all visitors, from those who came for the competition, to the genre fan, to the die-hard Lisa Gardner book buyer. Moonshine’s campaign had at its heart the belief the Facebook user should always be rewarded for their Like, and once the email address was collected, the first chapter of the author’s book was available for download.

In the building of this application Moonshine had provided a stylish solution to a number of marketing ambitions for the publisher, namely the launch of Lisa Gardner’s titles, building the author as a brand and building audience for the crime genre.

Since its launch in 1998, Russian Standard Vodka has grown to become a Russian’s number one premium vodka. Initially the preserve of its domestic market, it began expanding onto the international scene in 2006.

The brand’s parent company has established a deliberate marketing strategy that emphasises the brand’s 100% Russian pedigree – from recipe, raw materials to distillation and bottling. As part of a recent marketing campaign which set out to highlight the quality of the brand and elevate its profile we were asked to design and build a series of banner ads around the the tag ‘Vodka as it should be.’

A TV commercial had already been made, and our response to the brief was to develop both rich media expandable and un-expandable banner ads that utilised scenes and elements from the video. We also included call to action touch points to provoke the response to ‘Think Again’ – a challenge to the consumer’s existing discernment of vodka that the overall tag line is built on.

Reflecting the stylisation of the commercial, a simple skyscraper banner was created using product placement set against a backdrop created from a detail of the bottle’s label, as well as a series of html letterbox banners. These banners use rich colour and sensuous stills taken from the full length commercial and include the textual provocation.

The full length version of the commercial is hosted in a rich media expandable skyscraper banner.
As the user moves over the banner ad, it expands revealing a link back to the company’s website and two social media touch points – the brand’s YouTube TV channel (which hosts the commercial) and a call to action to ‘Like’ the brand on Facebook. This stylisation was also reused to create a YouTube masthead.

By retaining the aesthetics of the accompanying commercial, we were able to reinforce the sensuous and luxurious nature of the brand. The inclusion of touch points and external links allowed users to discover more about the brand and truly help them to ‘Think Again’.

what the agency said

‘It was a pleasure working with Moonshine Media. They really understood the brief and delivered a professional and aesthetically rich contribution to our campaign. We wouldn’t hesitate to choose them again .’

Broadbean is a global provider of online recruitment software for the recruitment industry.
To coincide with a refresh of its branding and new website launch we were asked to design a range of banner ads which would help promote the company’s improved search functionality and new mobile offerings.
The adverts covered standard skyscraper, MPU and leaderboard formats. Each was designed to replicate the clean, fresh and customer-focused feel of the new international website.

The message – and strapline for the campaign was evolved from the copy with which we were supplied by the client -
“Direct Sauce – The Perfect Condiment for Direct Hiring”
The main design element we used to convey this message was a pastiche image of the classic Heinz ketchup bottle which we treated to appear in Broadbean brand livery. This accompanied with some strong, clear type made for a strong aesthetic which was carried through all ensuing advertisements.

In addition, the client wanted us to come up with one interactive ad to accompany the more usual kind of banners aforementioned. He wanted the ad to relate to another line of copy he supplied us with; “Smash Direct Sauce In!” – the other prerequisites were that it had to have a fun game mechanic, and encourage the viewer to replay as many times as possible.

After pitching several concepts, the one which seemed the most appropriate and selected by the client was derived from us taking inspiration from the retro arcade Whac-a-Mole game.
Here, players engage directly with the Broadbean branding while they play as the mole is replaced with a bottle of Broadbean Direct Sauce. Once the game starts, the bottles begin to pop up at speed from a series of holes at random.

The object of the game is to ‘smash’ the bottles back into their hole by hitting them directly with the cursor,
which acts as a target finder, thereby adding to the player’s score. There is only ever a maximum of ten bottles that appear, so the player has to have their wits about them to hit all ten!
After having had their ten chances, they are presented with a message reflecting their performance, whether it be below par – average – or good, and challenges them to replay if they didn’t get top marks and a call to action to click through to Broadbean’s main site.

Not bad all in all for a 40 kb file size restriction!

Big Al’s Creative Emporium having recently been appointed by Betfair as their strategic and creative agency, asked Moonshine to work on the online advertising to accompany their recent viral campaign for the World’s Biggest Betting Community.

The viral ad plays on the 1990’s classic Ferrero Rocher Ambassadors Party ad, famed for its line “Ambassador, with this Rocher you are really spoiling us”.

Big Al’s ad features the same ambassador’s reception, except the Ferrero Rocher chocolates have been replaced by betting ‘nuggets’ with exclusive tips enclosed, and the ambassadors now being famed English sportsmen.

Betfair currently boasts footballer Lee Dixon, cricketer Michael Vaughan, rugby player Will Greenwood and National Hunt horse trainer Paul Nicholls as their ambassadors, and from Big Al’s having created this amusing pastiche with these high profile sporting figures, asked us to help work with them to build engagement online.

Rich media specs allowed us to to create a campaign that encompassed all key elements from the viral, but all operated around the premise of the ads inviting the user to ‘Meet the Betfair Ambassadors’ as a call to action.

We applied a style of design and animation to the ads which would compliment the aesthetic that the original and now pastiche version utilised, ie. a decadent surrounding shot in soft focus. We added to this key design assets prevalent throughout such as gilded frames, brass plaques, and elegant typography (again, imitating the original advert).

High profile placements enabled us to really get the campaign out to as wide an audience as possible – examples of which were a homepage takeover on the search engine Yahoo, super headers on the Telegraph and Guardian, as well as numerous overlays and expandable ads served on many other leading tabloid sites.

From these campaign ads Betfair has achieved and maintained a highly visible online presence. Our work has acted as a solid foundation to the preceding viral clip and has encouraged existing Betfair customers as well as potential new users to engage with the brand.

The Prince’s Rainforests Project (PRP) was set up in 2007 by HRH The Prince of Wales following reports from leading climate change experts confirming the high level of carbon emissions caused by tropical deforestation, with the goal of ”making the forests worth more alive than dead.”

Our role was to design and build a site which would assist in raising public awareness of this cause.

We implemented highly realistic 3D animated rainforest frogs, developed by Framestore, which users could position into a live recording via their personal computers’ webcam. We believe that at the time, we were the first to implement this innovative technique, although it has been since been seen in several other brands publicity.

Once the frogs were positioned and scaled to look realistically in situ, the user could film or record a short endorsement adding voice to the campaign and posting it to the site, as part of a bigger petition to heighten awareness of the problems facing the worlds rainforests.

In addition to the recorded endorsement the site also had an online editing tool to enable visitors to top and tail their clip with pre-recorded celebrity content. Some of the celebrities who participated in supporting the cause included Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Pele, and even the Dalai Lama!

Users could send their videos onto friends either by email or links through social network sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Digg, MySpace, Bebo etc to create a viral loop which were all tracked.

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the leading question and answer search engine, Ask.co.uk we were asked to create a microsite surrounding those seemingly ‘unanswerable’ questions that had been posed to Jeeves over the last decade.

Users were asked to enter their answers on the site, and have the ability to also rate others offerings. Examples of these unanswerable questions included; ‘What is the meaning of life?’, ‘Is there a God?’, and ‘Do blondes have more fun?’!

There was an online competition to win an iPad to encourage users to get involved with the competition, along with the draw of Ask signing up celebrities including hairdresser Nicky Clarke, TV presenter Sarah Beeny and astrologer Russell Grant to try to answer users’ queries.

The site was built as a bespoke wordpress theme, utilising the benefits of the built in SEO friendly features and a robust Content Management System (CMS) – this being ideal for the short period of time the site was live, as information was altered on a daily basis. The other benefit of building the site in this manner was the fact that it enabled us to successfully moderate the competition entries and comments before they had the chance to be posted on various social networks.

We were commissioned to design and build a new site for the launch of multinational advertising agency, OPEN.

The project’s main priority was to effectively and professionally showcase the agency’s broad range of TV campaigns within a variety of sectors, including packaged foods, baby care, alcohol and telecommunications.

An essential requisite was that the site had to be designed and developed taking into consideration
its requirement to be translatable and viewed in the numerous countries in which OPEN operates.

The body of work is displayed primarily as a video portfolio, each clip being fully integrated with social media
plug-ins, allowing each piece of work to be easily shared at the users convenience.

The OPEN site design is elegant, clean and sophisticated, and has now been successfully rolled out into various territories in addition to the UK including China, Thailand, Brazil and the Czech Republic wit each having a dedicated blog set up for that country’s main staff members and a live twitter feed. Each site is smart phone compliant throughout.

To promote the launch of Red Bull Cola, we created a series of online adverts, working alongside international agency, Kastner & Partners.

The creative for the rich media placements was required to convey the message that the cola is strong in flavour and completely natural.

We thought the best way to show these two prominent features of the soft drink was to actually show the viewer all of the natural ingredients – most of which are fairly exotic sounding, if not exotic looking. This would add emphasis to the organic nature of the drink and really reinforce the cola’s main benefit to the consumer and show them exactly what goes into producing each and every can.

The list was made up of fifteen ingredients, each photographically represented and shown within two banners, one horizontal, one vertical, scrolling along and dropping into the can making up the newly released drink.

This animation was concluded with the key message split into three strong lines of copy:
The cola from Red Bull. 100% Pure Cola. Strong & Natural.

The Sony NEX-5 is a camera that enables the user to make Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR)-quality images accessible to everyone.

We had to match this statement with a creative campaign that not only made this technological advance clear and visible, but which also made sure the ads reflected and complimented the coinciding TV campaign.

We executed a collection of banners that not only highlighted the technical benefits of the camera, but visually stimulated the viewer to see a real-life example of its comparable superiority to those of other models.

The advertisements themselves had content which varied from pre-recorded video material derived from the television campaign to live action segments tracked over a 3D model of the camera, all of which were translated to numerous rich media banner placements.

The aim was to create a multilingual site to accompany the new Unilever product launch of Knorr Vie – a series of shot drinks made up of a combination of fruit and vegetables.

The site had to be visually engaging in order to maintain the user’s interest, whilst also being informative, and conveying the key message of the product – that each shot’s ingredients added up to one of the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables per day.

Our solution to this brief was to take the user on a journey around a ‘Knorr Vie World’ – a world constructed using real fruits and vegetables. Via a focal signpost the user could navigate in different directions within the landscape, areas of which related to distinct categories of information about the product, ranging from ingredients lists to nutritional details, and latest news.

The site was also required to have a back-end Content Management System (CMS) in place so that countries would be able to upload and edit their own content.

Unilever is one of the world’s leading suppliers of fast-moving consumer goods. Their brand portfolio includes the cleaning product Cif (previously known as Jif).

We were given the task of designing and building an intranet system for their employees to access all kinds of product information ranging from design guidelines to brand strategy documents. Another requirement of the site was to allow visitors to download a large variety of media, as well as be able to preview and then watch promotional video content with ease.

The client wanted us to create an environment which had the ambience of a sleek modern studio or apartment, in which the user feels compelled to investigate.

The creative solution we came up with was to design a polished 3D scene of the exterior and interior of such a property. The user is presented with the outside of the building when they first access the intranet, and from clicking through – they enter the building.

Having entered the scene, there are various props which denote the differing sections of the intranet, which twinkle and sparkle to encourage the user to inspect further.

Autotrader is the UK’s #1 site to buy and sell new and used cars, bikes, vans, trucks and caravans.

Having undergone a complete rebrand above and below the line, we worked closely with Autotraders brand agency HMDG to bring their ideas for online advertising to life to drive traffic to the new autotrader.co.uk site.

Rich media placements enabled us to really get our teeth into the character of the new Autotrader avatars – known affectionally as ‘The Bots’. We utilised slick 3D character animations to make the ads engaging, interactive and add a real sense of fun to each execution.

Examples of which were an expandable mid-page unit (MPU) where the user had the ability to actually draw their own car, and watch a Bot drive off in it, a car colour slider, where you could pick your ideal colour of a vehicle – and see what opinion a Bot had of your taste – and a complete homepage takeover, where several of the Bot family appeared at the footer of the page to laser and demolish what was the old Autotrader homepage to reveal the new site design!

From these campaign ads, Autotrader achieved, and maintained, a highly visible online presence, and has continued to encourage and challenge users to engage with the brand.

To accompany the relaunch of the Ask search engine and TV campaign, we were tasked with creating an application that allowed the user to dress up the famous Ask Jeeves character.

We worked alongside internationally renown visual effects company, Framestore – who were responsible with supplying the assets of the new improved Jeeves and his plethora of outfits.

In total, there are over 100,000 different possible outfit combinations within the application, including more garish getups such as a Las Vegas era Elvis, Superman and Austin Powers, along with more refined and stylish numbers supplied by Savile Row tailors Gieves & Hawkes, and popular clothing brand Ben Sherman.

The application operates with an intuitive drag and drop mechanism, making it quick, easy, and most importantly fun for the search engines’ broad audience base to engage with the application, and encourage exploration and repeat visits through the wealth of content available.

Users are encouraged to share the fun promotional tool with their friends via direct email and social networks, and even have the option to make their own fantastic Jeeves creation the star of the Ask.co.uk homepage.

Clearcast was founded in 2008 by Britain’s eight largest commercial broadcasters to simplify the process of getting advertising to air.

The key objective of this project was for us to completely revamp their existing site in terms of both design style and build development.

From artwork conception to page template designs we led all creative execution from start to finish, making sure that all reflected Clearcasts’ position as a modern and well respected advertising industry tool.

Sat behind the new corporate aesthetic we developed a bespoke Content Management System (CMS) in order for the site to have flexibility, and cater for future expansion in line with the company’s requirements.

In addition, since the initial launch, we have been asked to develop further functionality to be implemented within the site. For example, online seminar booking has been added, and a complete payments Application Programming Interface (API) system has been put in place.

Specific Media, Europe’s largest independent digital media platform, leads the industry with ground-breaking technology which enables advertisers to target consumers throughout Northern and Western Europe and North America based on demographics, behaviours, geographic locations and the contextual relevance of websites visited. Specific Media’s Premium Network reaches more than 33 million consumers each month in the UK, more than 100 million across Europe and over 260 million consumers globally. The combination of reach and proprietary targeting technologies allows Specific Media to create highly customised audience segments for advertisers. Since 1999, Specific Media has been enabling advertisers to build relationships with their target audiences across the top consumer branded publishers. Visit www.specificmedia.co.uk

By combining in-house developed behavourial targeting technology with consumer insight, advertisers are able to take over its network and only target in-market customers who have previously demonstrated an interest in the brand or product offering, rather than all online users.

To help brief the press in support of its UK launch, we were commissioned to produce an animation that explained how this technology works in a entertaining and original manner. All text also had to be translated into French and German – Specific Media’s other two European markets at the time.

Using Flash we began by re-imagining the brand safe environment of the advertising network as a city. We then created three distinct character designs which were placed into three different scenarios representing the three approaches of the technology – netcast, reachcast and smartcast. Each character was seen walking down the same city street but exposed to different advertising spaces whose timings remained the same throughout each walk-through. A brief textual outline of the advertising process accompanied each journey, whilst additional copy was displayed on the final screen.

A rollover of each suite reveals its key features and benefits whilst clicking on each starts the animation.

For Netcast, which enables advertisers to completely take over advertising space on the network, the character is surrounded by adverts for the same brand across different props as he walks down the street.

In a second scenario, a set number of a brand’s advert are placed in prominent positions along the same street but amongst other generic ads, to illustrate how Reachcast can cap the number of times a unique user is targeted by any one campaign across the network.

For Smartcast’s behavourial capability, our character is seen on the same street, but this time, the adverts have been replaced with ones specific to this character’s interests and current shopping behaviour.

Network Rail is the government-created owner and operator of most of the rail infrastructure in Great Britain.

Working in conjunction with PAA, we had to devise a series of creative rich media ads whose aim was to make the public aware of planned network improvements in the Network Rail service over the Christmas and New Year period.

The Network Rail livery is very striking as its primary brand colours are black and orange. This lent itself to
us designing a series of visuals which utilised this vivid palette to emulate hazard warning lights.

We also designed a series of graphical devices which took the form of a series of stylised chevrons interlinked to imply a moving series of railway carriages.

Once animated, these added a real dynamism to the ads – with the chevron trails moving in and out of the ads’ visible area, and with each transition, pulling in another line of information about the possible disruption commuters were likely to face over the holiday period.

We also employed another creative in the form of an animated train station departures board to display a cycle of key messages in the second phase of the campaign.

Wired is well known as being the full colour monthly American magazine, in publication since 1993. Its subject matter is based on how current and future technologies affects culture, the economy and politics.

In 2009, WIRED launched a UK edition of the magazine. Our task was to publicise this launch via an online advertising campaign. We worked alongside HMDG to design and build a number of different creative executions, incorporating various elements, from animation of WIRED UK issue #1’s cover, to ad placements pulling in live RSS feeds from the wired.co.uk site, to 3D animations tied into user initiated expandable banners.

Although we employed diverse techniques to keep the campaign stimulating across the various placements – the banners all had however, the uniform message throughout, that: ‘WIRED UK: Is The Magazine About What’s Next’.

To go hand-in-hand with the rich media campaign, we also worked on a series of HTML email send outs offering various subscription promotions to WIRED UK.

Finally, to coincide with the time of the first issues’ launch, we worked to create several outdoor placements.
These took the form of digital six sheets. They displayed the key facts and information about the newly launched magazine – its cover, its cost – and several lines of copy describing the magazine’s mantra. The media was placed in prominent places across the London underground network to push the message and build awareness with an offline

We worked on two projects for the TES Connect website, in two different mediums – but both operating as tools to explain to users how to use certain sections of the site.

The first project took the form of a flash animation which was situated on the main homepage. The animation, via iconographic styling, and instructional designs, described how the main features of TES Connect operated, and how the user could glean the most useful information from using the site in a certain way.

The second project was also an instructional tool, but this time, the outcome was a video clip, as opposed to the predominantly vector-based animation.

We recorded live video capturing a user’s journey navigating around the TES Connect site, edited the material and accompanied it with a series of voice-overs explaining various areas of the site, what they did, and how they worked.

For example, two of the key areas the client wanted us to concentrate on were how to fill out the extensive job search section, and the different levels of subscription to the publication that were on offer.

NiQuitin is a range of nicotine replacement products designed to help smokers give up their habit. There are various nicotine replacement therapy products manufactured under the brand (e.g. chewing gum, lozenges, transdermal systems) and all are well-known temporary aids for the cigarette smoker who wants to give up smoking.

However, what product is best for certain types of smokers to get on the right track? To answer this problem we were asked to design and develop an application that would sit within the main NiQuitin site, and act as a tool to help consumers choose the right product suited to them.

We achieved this by having a series of questions and options for consumer to choose from, each answer narrowing down the scope for what would be best to try, and after only half a dozen entries, the user was then presented with the packshot and information about the NiQuitin product they are personally most suited to.

It was a quick and easy way for people to reach the right product and access relevant information about a difficult task, which we all know, giving up smoking is.

Hachette Filipacchi is the largest magazine publisher in the world. Within their portfolio of glossy titles is Elle – arguably one of the most famous women’s magazine in the world.

We were asked to design and develop an application which was aimed to sit within the elle.co.uk site, and function as an online lookbook, displaying the latest trends and fashions available from the retailer Littlewoods.

The application took the aesthetic of appearing as an actual magazine, and the user was able to flick through the magazine’s virtual pages, browsing over complete outfits, footwear, accessories etc as well as being able to click through to find out more information on the products that interested them or caught their eye.

When developing the lookbook, we also built a Content Management System (CMS) for the client to be able to add extra images and accompanying copy as more items were added to particular collections throughout the duration of the season.

Initially launching the application with barely a dozen items, this flexibility was of great importance to the client, as we ended up with over one hundred fashion items uploaded.

Snakeball is a downloadable Playstation Network game, and is a 3D remake of the classic video game Snake.

We were asked by the game’s developers, Gamoolasoft, to brand the game from the starting point of identity development and to then proceed with creating some of the elements which were to be featured as part of the in-game graphic design.

We were supplied with the initial character designs that had been developed, and from these and through liaising closely with the client, we developed several proposed routes for the look of the game, its packaging, and the live in-game graphics.

We needed to encapsulate the retro characteristics of the game, whilst at the same time making sure not to alienate first time users, who would be unaware it was a development on a classic game title. It was also key that the fun factor of the game and the entertaining style of gameplay were represented.

This project was briefed as being a promotional tool for Times Online, with the aim to not only drive traffic to their online news site, but publicise the release of the film ‘The Damned United’.

‘The Damned United’ is a British film released in 2009 staring, amongst others, Martin Sheen and Jim Broadbent. The film was adapted for the big screen from the largely fictional novel of the same name written by David Peace – based on Brian Clough’s tenure as manager of the football club, Leeds United.

We were asked by Times Online required to create an engaging flash application to celebrate the
colourful life and times of Brian Clough.

The result was an interactive timeline, ‘Clough in the Rough’ which elegantly combines video, images and archived newspaper articles from both The Times and The Sunday Times.

The application highlights the key events in Clough’s life, centering on his tumultuous managerial career: and by way of a carousel displaying photographs and titles, the user can choose to scroll through selected dates, or click through to find out more about the events of that particular occasion.

A Content Management System (CMS) was built for the client to manage and update their content in the Flash application. This allows the client the flexibility to re-skin the project to use for a different subject matter.

Butlins is known for being the family-orientated holiday camp destination with several sites across the UK.

This year however, they decided to host a street dance festival aimed at a predominantly teenage audience – an event which still needed to retain appeal to the whole family who would be accompanying the attendees.

We were invited to initially pitch, and having been successful to then provide Butlins with designs and reproducible artwork which were more relevant to the event than their typical corporate material, and outside of their normal creative boundaries.

We developed three routes: one with a heavy urban aesthetic and associative styling; the second family-orientated and the third somewhere in the middle of the two. All, however had the prerequisite of being contemporary and publicising a full weekend focussed on street dance, including top name acts and urban-themed shows and activities.

The selected creative was then translated into a variety of online and press adaptations from national press placements, to six sheet posters, to numerous direct mail formats.

Domestos is a well-known popular household cleaning product manufactured by Unilever. We were involved in creating a complete online advertising campaign and microsite for a new version of the original bleach product – Domestos 24HR.
To accompany this, we also produced a CD-Rom containing all information pertaining to the brand, which was intended to be distributed between other advertising agencies who were also promoting the product.

The assorted online ads included live action video, rich media, and several user-initiated expandable placements.

Our brief was to demonstrate how, if left unattended, germs spread and multiply, literally as a cloud, and how the new Domestos product can help the consumer combat this problem by keeping the bathroom germ free for twenty-four hours.

The creative execution for the campaign took the form of a typical bathroom appearing initially as being clean
but then with the scene swapping out for one being shown under an ultraviolet light to display the previously unseen volume of germs present, which then proceed to spread and spread via a germ cloud.

The microsite elaborated on this execution without having the constraints of the online ads, enabling the user to scroll along a timeline whilst viewing a typical family bathroom over the period of a day, and seeing how the germs multiplied in this time. There was also additional content accessed by several hotspots, which contained information about types of germs, and a ‘germ-u-lator’ which calculated what percentage of your bathroom was covered in germs!

The CD-Rom required both print and interactive design and production. It displayed in a coherent and accessible manner a variety of media, from the Domestos 24HR TV spot, to brand documentation, as well as downloadable PR Packs.

We have worked on several campaigns to advertise various products manufactured by HP as well as the technology services offered.

The main objective was to build upon the existing brand awareness and increase the online visibility of this somewhat niche Mexican tequila.

The brief also prescribed that the site needed to be more than a source of information and encapsulate the spirited personality of the brand bringing the product to life.

The site was required to be translated into several languages, and indeed, to later act as a launch pad for additional promotional materials prescribed by these individual markets.

In terms of design, we decided that the overall look and feel of the site should mirror the product’s image:
clean yet striking and of course, dynamic and exciting.

To give this impression the site incorporates a lot of animation and a multitude of transitions between all pages and areas of the site, so as to keep the user feeling as though the site is extremely varied, and therefore, of interest to look explore further.

We made use of a 3D Flash technique (papervision) to give these animations a little something extra, and ensured they would be something which the mainly web-savvy demographic would not have seen every day!

The additional video on the site and the availbale downloadable content, such as the numerous cocktail recipes, also helped to increase the user experience, and in turn, extend the duration of each user’s visit.

Why Us

Perhaps the strength of the digital magic we create flows from our eclectic team and our diverse range of experience and skills, or perhaps there’s something in the water cooler.

This means our creativity can come from any direction, and with a sister office in New York our inspiration is global

Sometimes our ideas are brilliantly simple, sometimes they are brilliantly subtle. But they are always highly effective, flexible and very good looking.

Our client relationships are close because when an idea has happy parents, it’s far more likely to grow up into something really beneficial.

You Get

Whether we’re pouring Moonshine gold into a mobile app, a website, online advertising, digital out-of-home creative or viral social media marketing, we always think beyond the communications brief to consider the commercial challenge.

The British Association of Mixed Martial Arts (BAMMA) is a UK-based mixed martial arts promotion.
The association was formed in 2009, and its live events are broadcast on the television channel Bravo.

We were asked by BAMMA’s Head of Promotions to create a series of ads that would act as an online push to drive more traffic to the bamma.com site, and in due course, generate ticket purchases to see the forthcoming live event.

We were somewhat constrained in the fact we had to develop creative within the file size of standard banners, but this did not deter us from creating an effective campaign which incorporated the key aspects of Bamma 3.

The first of these was the fight card itself, with the names and photos of the competing fighters all displayed.
These photos were artistically enhanced to give more menace and intensity to each fighter and add more drama to the event’s billing and thus help convey the power of this highly physical sport.

Secondly, we developed an animation of an intensely burning fire created by way of actionscript coding which addressed the limitations of file size and acted as a very striking visual component that featured throughout all of the ads.

E4 Stings is an annual competition organised by UK commercial broadcaster Channel 4 to promote its digital arm E4 – a station freely available on cable, satellite or Freeview platforms.

Each year, creatives are challenged to make a time-sensitive ‘sting’ – an on-air ident that runs between adverts and programmes on the channel.

The only requisites are a time-constraint and the need to include the E4 logo integrated into the idea.

The ident had to feed into E4’s irreverent and comic attitude and anarchic approach to promotion and can be live action, animated, 2D, 3D or 4D and backed by any budget size. As an assist, E4 provides the station logo and a choice of soundbeds to help comply with issues of copyright, although original music compositions are welcomed.

A panel of independently selected judges reviews each year’s entries and a shorltist of up to 25 finalists have their E sting broadcast within the E4 schedule.

In 2007, we entered the competition which had been extended to include its digital music station E4 Music and a prescribed ten second sting. We developed a 2D animation of a stylised car (drawn in the channel’s iconic purple colour) and driver. An amplifier is attached to the roof of the car which is seen driving along until its front wheel (replaced in this instance by the E4 logo) falls off and rolls away, coming to rest in the final frame. We commissioned an original electronic composition (appearing to be played from the car) whose final beats accompanied the appearance of the letters spelling out the word ‘MUSIC’ alongside the E4 logo.

The sting was successfully shortlisted and broadcast across the E4 Music channel.

The British Open Golf Championship is the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf which takes place annually on one of nine historic golf links within the UK. Since 2004, Lexus has been an Official Patron and Car Supplier to the Championship.

In 2008, we were approached to design and build a website promoting the luxury car marque’s range of premium hybrid vehicles – a world’s first – and its association with the Championship.

With visuals supplied by Lexus, we built a site with animation and styling that exploited the full capabilities of Flash and showcased the elegance, sophistication and technological benefits of the complete hybrid range.

A landing page redirects visitors to a site introduced by a brief video sequence framed with taglines that connect the brand to the tournament before arriving at the site itself.

Once having entered theHybrid Range site, navigation is either manual through a dropdown menu or intuitive via a horizontal scrolling image gallery. Clicking on each image brings it into full view with accompanying information with the Lexus badge acting as the preloader.

A brochure and test drive could also be requested online, alongwith a discreet scrolling ticker which provides constant information including score updates from the Golf Championship, reinforcing Lexus’ patronage of the tournament.

A series of flash banner ads were also built to accompany the campaign and sponsorship, highlighting the benefits and features of the world’s first performance hybrid range.

Vauxhall Tribes is a campaign initiative from UK car marque Vauxhall (whose European sister brand is Opel) that seeks to showcase the finest unsigned urban talent from the world of breakdancing, beatboxing and MCing, whilst aligning the brand with a young, urban demographic.

In 2007, the competition was extended to urban street artists for the first time. We were asked to design and produce an update of the 2006 Vauxhall Tribes urban-orientated site, which would not only encourage people to view the site, but once there register online for an audition or apply for tickets and support the event.

It was important, that having identified the key demographic as street artists and followers of urban music and dance, we created the right strategy/creative to reach this audience.
In response, we built and developed a site that intuitively appealed to this group: A DJ mixer device was used for navigation throughout the site whilst a contemporary street artist was commissioned to create unique character illustrations which were shown on the various pages. The urban look and feel was further conveyed by a graffiti-themed background and colouring as well as the typography of the redesigned and stylised logo which was reproduced on event apparel such as hoodies and t-shirts.

The brief not only prescribed driving people to the site but encourage them to register online for the competition and/or support the event.

The art direction and production was extended to print publicity including posters promoting the four regional heats as well as the London final and event tickets.
